'Two receivers that want to be the alpha,' DeVonta Smith on embracing shared leadership role with AJ Brown in Eagles offense
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

When the Philadelphia Eagles offered an extension to DeVonta Smith this offseason, it became clear that the franchise was to pick part of its solid offensive line, especially the dynamic receivers duo of Smith and AJ Brown. That’s why, despite the huge money involved in each of their contracts, the Eagles agreed.

Having two of the biggest star receivers on the team, one would expect some jealousy, differences, hard feelings, or intense competitiveness. However, that’s not the case with Smith and Brown, as apart from being each other’s backbone on the football field while forming a relying pairing with the quarterback, the two share a very close bond.

Speaking of which, star receiver Smith was asked on Tuesday, what it’s like for Philly to have two dominating receivers on the roster. He replied that two receivers in leading roles only leave a positive impact on the offense, rather than negative.

Everybody wants to spin it this way, in that way, but you have two guys who want to be the alpha. And I feel like that's a good thing. You got two guys that are happy for each other. I mean, A.J., we talk every day. We call each other every day. We make sure that we talk on the phone every day, whether it’s football, life, last night we had the kids on the phone talking, you know, babies just sitting there doing the baby talk. said DeVonta Smith, via the Eagles’ official website

DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown’s exciting partnership

While talking about his pairing with Brown for the foreseeable future, given his three-year contract extension which would kick in after his fifth year, Smith also shared how excited he feels to be playing alongside receiver Brown and how it would benefit the team’s offense.

Smith shared he has grown quite close to Brown and there’s nothing better to know than that he has guys sharing similar stories, passion, and dedication for football as him.

It means a lot to just go out here and be able to continue to do it alongside of him and everyone else in this building. DeVonta Smith added

The addition of running back Saquon Barkley and Smith’s extension ensures that the Eagles have solidified their offensive line for a long time and will dominate the league as they did last season till the better half of the season.
